As an avid bread baker, I found this book to be interesting and useful. The recipes are good standards, and the added inputs by the author made a good read. I'm sure to someone not into his history and his opinions might consider it to be just "blah, blah, blah", but I enjoyed it.

This book is an essential for bread makers. The recipes are easy to follow and have interesting little descriptions. There are all types of bread recipes from yeast bread to baking powder and griddle cakes, something for everyone. My only wish is that this book and ALL cookbooks be spiral bound to keep it open when you are using it.

I'm really new to making bread and have really enjoyed reading through the introduction of this book. Beard put in information that describes all of the ingredients involved in making a loaf of bread so that you can better understand the overall process. He then guides you step by step through your first loaf of basic white bread and offers advice for troubleshooting. The rest of the recipes in the book use the same techniques used in the first few recipes, so if you don't understand a particular step you can jump back to the beginning and look it up. Also the illustrations are beautiful as well as accurate. I fully recommend this book to someone like myself, who wants to learn more about breadmaking from a book that can be carried around comfortably.
