A little disturbing how things turn out during the entire story. It IS interesting, and you get caught up to try to find out what really happened to Eden Close to cause her to be in the circumstances she is in. My friend recommended the book...you sort of get caught up in it and need to finish it...not that it is bad and you wouldn't want to finish it, it is just a little sad

Andy is in his thirties when he travels back to his home town for his mother's funeral. During his adolescence, his neighbor's home had a tragedy befall it. A young girl, Eden, was blinded when a rapist shot and killed her father. Andy had been infatuated with Eden and on this visit, nineteen years later, resumes his relationship with her and seeks to unravel the mystery of that tragic night. This is a good page-turner and well-written.

Painful book to read, and not a good one for me to read when my own mother is ill. I have to say I'm liking Anita Shreve less and less with each more recent book. yet I keep reading her. This one held no plot surprises and the writing was not up to what I expect of her.
