Written as a technical school text book by Hindustan Machine Tools of India, one already knows this book will not be a page turner. On the other hand, it is an informative book about CNC machines. It provides perhaps one of the best overall introductions into the field of Mechatronics. The field where mechanical movements are controlled by electronics and initiated by software. In this book, the early chapters deal with the interdisciplinary fields, "Electronics for Mechanical Engineers followed by "Mechanical Systems for Electronic Engineers". Both chapters contain a good amount of basic material in an understandable format. The book does an admiral job of conveying information with a comprehensible format. A US reader may be hampered by the fact that many of the tables contain specs listed in metric units or list unfamiliar alloys of steel. The book contains a good chapter on various alloys and where they are usually used on a CNC machine. Other chapters such as Bearings, Guide ways, etc. classify various designs and impart much information. The chapter on electrical drive systems gets a little deep. The book ends with some good CNC programming examples. The usefulness of this book is difficult to estimate in the USA where the field of Mechatronics is largely ignored, but it provides an excellent overview of the design and systems that makeup a CNC machine. Anyone who has to purchase a CNC machine, or wants to become educated on the basic inner workings of these machines will find this book more or less sums it up. In short, one of the better overall texts for the price
