I like all othere reviewers practically, read and loved the bone books. Now there is no question about it the book is not on the callibure of bone. But it is still a good book (much Like Godfather 3 compared to the first ones) from around page 20 to 120. what i mean by this is the begining is lacking and in my opinion the end is a disaster. (in the final sentences of the review i describe this, those last sentences can be considered a spoiler, i clearly marked them) At the start of the book you feel very far from rose and dont feel connected to her at all, and the hints of her sister being "Different" are much more extreme then they should be and because of this when come to the surprise you find yourself saying no duh. Now for the good bulk of the book about page 20 to 120 is good and fleshy and what you come to expect from a bone book. so would i recommend it? Possible. Obviously read the original bones first and then if you find yourself wanting more read it. I do recommend refreshing your memory of the originals before reading this one as i did not remember the originals i was slightly confused as there is constant references to them. WARNING!!!! Spoiler Sentence WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now at the end of the book she is forced to kill her dog which in my book is a low and shallow way of getting the reader involved and intimate with the Characters, one being the dog lover i am and a writer as well.

As I stated in my title, I would highly suggest reading this book AFTER you have read the Bone installments (or the One Volume Edition). This story takes place in the young life of Rose, before she had become Queen of whatever land she's from (can't remember off the top of my head as I read this book quite some time ago). It tells of how Rose became to be the valiant warrior that she is (and soon queen), and what became of those close to her. Just fresh from reading Bone, I was very enthusiastic about diving into this story. Although I think the watercolors are done fantastically well, I missed Smith's animations. The story didn't quite captivate me as did Bone, but it was still worth the read. Highly recommended for any Bone fan.

Charles Vess has put together nothing but good artwork and Jeff Smith has crafted some of the finest story lines in comic books ever, just on that, you cannot really go wrong. This book is different from "Bone", but still helps to teach you more about the same universe and the history of these characters that we have loved in "Bone". If you are a Bone fan, you have to check it out. If you are just a fan of fantasy comics, then it is worth checking out you you.
