Synthetic Instruments: Concepts and Applications

(Paperback)-Instrumentation is the term used for the kit that measures and monitors the conditions, properties and status of either circuitry or real-world quantities like flow rates in pipes, airspeed in planes, temperatures and pressures in chemical plants, and so on. And the big news is that the way electronic instrumentation technology is built is changing in a deeply fundamental way. It is making an evolutionary leap to a new method of design that is producing what are known as synthetic instruments. This new technology promises to be the most significant advance in electronic test and instrumentation, and it will profoundly affect all test and measurement equipment developed in the future. Synthetic instruments are like ordinary instruments in that they are specific to a particular measurement or test. However, synthetic instruments are implemented purely in software that runs on general purpose.

This cogently reasoned book draws together many powerful design ideas into a vision of how synthetic instrumentation should be done. Future designers, by and large, will either be following Nadovich's prescription, or wishing they had.
