This was one of the first of many books on publishing and marketing books. It is dated but I found it helpful. In May 2009 I published Snappy Sayings: wit & wisdom from the world's greatest minds. I referred to other book more often in preparing my book for publication but still found some ideas not included in other books. If you are serious about on marketing your book this is one of the books you must read. Snappy Sayings: wit & wisdom from the world's greatest minds is mostly selling on Amazon and Cole's book is outdated on web marketing. He does cover the whole range of marketing possibilities, the ones not related to the web are still relevant and useful. It is one of about 5 or 6 books that made my self publishing business a reality.

This book is full of good information. However, I have found that, in the publishing business, it is necessary to read/review a number of books on the subject of book publicity and marketing. Because each author has different takes on the industry and the process for getting books sold, one needs to pick and choose ideas and advice from many different sources to come up with a cohesive picture of what the publishing business will "look like." Cole has some very good advice and some ideas to gain inroads to niche markets that have been quite helpful. But just like all of the other "how to market/promote your book" authors, his advice is not exhaustive.

The book industry is changing so fast it takes some moxy to even try summarizing publishing, distributing, and marketing tactics, knowing that much of what is written will be somewhat out-of-date by the time the book is published (or shortly thereafter). The Complete Guide to Book Marketing offers a strong foundation of information concerning the more traditional aspects of book distribution and marketing. When read with a companion book, such as Plug Your Book: Online Book Marketing for Authors, Book Publicity through Social Networking (which does just the opposite), the more comprehensive picture is revealed. The importance of a strong foundation cannot be stressed enough and that is where this book shines.
