I had never heard of this book and found it while browsing in a bookstore. Thank goodness it caught my eye because it is absolutely wonderful! Besides the obvious joy ones gets from the smart rhymes, the story itself really makes you smile. I actually laughed out loud the first time I read it. It's like the book was written to entertain the parents as well as the kids, sort of like the animated movies they make nowadays. The line about Itching Down not being a "waspish sort of town" is great, a wonderful play on words. Another appealing feature of this book is the amount of text in it. Unlike a lot of board books, this one actually has more than one sentence per page. I realize babies don't have much of an attention span, but as your child gets older (mine is now 12 months), you'll want books with a little more heft, and this book provides that. I wish I could find more books out there like this one.

I've stumbled upon this book by accident here at Amazon. My daughter is 2 1/2 and LOVES bread and everything to do with it. Needless to say, this story is a HUGE hit! She demands to read it several times a day. The rhyming is dead on and the illustrations are phenomenally detailed - we find some new character/detail that we missed before almost every time we read the book, which keeps the story interesting not just for her, but for me as well. This is a first children's book that I don't get tired of reading to my daughter day in and day out :)

I received this book when I was a little girl...way back when it was written. My original copy is much loved and I wanted to continue to be able to share it with my children and grandchildren. I am so glad it is still in print.
