The Knutsons present a highly specialized book about an incredibly narrow subject in such a common sense, no nonesense, wise and generally applicable way, that this isn't only the best dog book I've ever read, it's the best advice book I've ever read. While the latter half of the book focuses, and rightly so, on developing your Labrador retriever as a pointing dog, the first half focuses on developing your dog generally, and your puppy specifically. And it is in that section that I think the Knutsons are brilliant. This book should be purchased by anyone with a dog, period. Let alone Labs. Let alone hunting Labs. You own a dog or you are planning to get a dog, buy the book. The advice on how to select a puppy, how to treat a puppy, how to train your dog, and how to think of your dog (e.g., "a dog is a dog. It's not a human. Don't treat it like one" is exceptionally smart and suprisingly rare in dog books (at least the dozen or so that I've read). I can't recommend the book enough. I wish they'd do a second printing because there are some typos in this edition, but they are minor and ignorable.

We have ordered this book twice since April of 2007. Both times the publisher and Amazon have canceled our order due to the book not being available after waiting approximately 8 weeks for delivery. It's truly been a disapointment. Maybe we will get the book before our dog turns 10! He's currently 10 months old and fortunately with a very good trainer right now. The book came highly reccommended by the trainer, we are just unable to obtain it. Thanks for nothing!

Buy and read this book if you want to train and hunt your new lab puppy. It is very informative and gives a great idea of the overall training process. It may be the only book you need to help you get your dog to point, retrieve, and be an all around joy to own.
