(Hardcover)-The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet . The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence. The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

    My doctor recommended this diet to me, so I bought a copy of the book and did it for a little while. First I lost 17 pounds one month, another 2 pounds after that, and then I lost another 10.5 pounds in three weeks. So it does work, and I kept about half of it off, but I wouldn't recommend this as a permanent way of life. I found quite a few setbacks to this plan. For one, you are either extremely full or extremely hungry, which makes it hard to control yourself. Second, the phases feel very restrictive, and sometimes you feel like you can't eat anything, or like you have to plan all of your meals a week in advance, which I didn't find very practical or convenient. Third, and perhaps worst of all, the diet made me experience episodes of constipation. I gave this three stars, though, because I did get some good things out of this. For one, I did learn some good habits which I still do today (I don't use rolls when I eat hot dogs or hamburgers, and I buy whole wheat bread now). Also, like I said, I did lose some weight and kept a good percentage of it off. But I would recommend this more for the person who wants to lose a quick 10-20 pounds. If you are looking for a lifestyle change, I have done better counting calories and watching my portions. But if you feel you need a program to follow, chose between Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, or NutriSystem.

    I am a tasty meal lover (meet, spaghetti, bread, potato, sweets etc. - my favorite food). I was afraid of going on any diet that lacks a good meet taste (mainly garden variety, especially steamed one). And, yes, I am (was) 240 lbs thin:). When my doctor recommended South Beach, I though yeh, sure, but decided to give it a trial. Now, week and a half later, I am 230 lbs (10 lbs less and keep going down). What is positive - the recipes are good to feel the greens tasty and they do have meat and fish and I almost do not recall my attractions to carbohydrate type dishes, not yet, at least . What is not that good - you need to have almost full time cook in your kitchen to be able to keep those very diverse meals coming.

    I find this book a good learning experience... I did not realize how wrong I was eating until I got into all the facts this book offers. Very helpfull to look at food in a total different way. I am now giving my body what it needs to be healthy, rather than pinning it down with wrong foods that constantly makes me feeling bloated and with no real energy. I do not need those energy drinks anymore! And I am still losing weight and feeling great!
