When my now 16 and 18 year-old grandchildren were small, Thunder Cake was one of their favorite stories, but somewhere along the way the book was misplaced. Of the younger group, one grandson is frightened of storms, so I gratefully found and purchased Thunder Cake for him. This story, combined with matter-of-fact attitudes in those around him, has helped him to overcome his fear. Nellie Peck Hen was a favorite of the older kids (we have real chickens as well as a chicken theme in the kitchen)and one of my "kitchen chickens" continues to be called Nellie by the kids. We have baked the Thunder Cake from the recipe in the book and it is a hit, especially when it is brought out immediately after reading the story. We're building our own memories as we go!

What a wonderful book to share with little ones on a stormy day! We read the book, gathered our ingredients and made a Thunder Cake according to the recipe. Make sure to have some small brown bags to "pop" for the thunder, along with the real thunder. After the cake is finished, top with some gooey store-bought icing--yummy. Then have everyone guess what the "secret ingredient" is, only you and the little ones know. They'll have so much fun revealing the secret. This book is sure to make longlasting memories.
