I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I actually thought it was going to be funny but it's not. It's not funny but it's a bit ironic. It's clever, suspenseful, and insightful into economics, war, environmental issues, and politics. My only gripe is that Brooks focuses on the technical details of one too many weapons, tanks, and planes for my taste (those parts might please the boys out there). A couple other minor issues are that I got bogged down with the details on the introductions of the narrators sometimes. It slowed down my pace. Also, the speaking styles of the narrators got on my nerves at times (like Brooks was trying too hard to make them sound normal and modern). A few standout parts include the ONE and only female narrator in the book and her tale of survival with the help of the phantom Mets, the battle at Yonkers, and the defecting Chinese submarine. I actually gasped out loud at this one image of hundreds of zombies crawling over the sub in the pitch black at the bottom of the ocean. Brooks creates great imagery in some scenes. It is also interesting how Brooks creates a modern post-war world. For instance, when we have to completely rebuild America, 60% of the population have careers such as "analyst" or "consultant" and they have no tangible skills to help rebuild society. Therefore, the class system is totally upended. This book may actually make me want to pick up more zombie fiction in the future, or least more Max Brooks.

At first I thought the book was interesting. Then it turned to boring and towards the end I was just waiting for it to end. This book would be much better if the author changed it from the characters telling their stories in past tense to present tense. It would be much more interesting and scary. I didn't find the book funny or scary. I'm not really sure what kind of book it was trying to be.
