I saw the comics come out in the 90's. I wanted the whole comic issues that came out then. This is a good companion to the DVD's that are for sell.

First off, I think that this page has reviews for the first two books of X-Men Evolution comics. I'll review both and hope you're interested in one or the other. Vol. One: (three stars) The art is more cartoony than regular X-Men, but still okay. As to the stories: 1# introduces Xavier, Storm, Mystique (wearing her costume with the skulls and white, rather than the black leather she shows up in later in these comics) Magneto, and Wolverine. It's basicly a fill-in-the-blanks. Actually, this whole book does nothing but fill blanks. 2# "Seeing Clearly" introduces Cyclops and prejudice against mutants. 3# "Hearing Things" intruduces Jean Grey, no code name, who is rather overwhelmed by her powers, and Scott's huge crush on her. Rather cute, actually. He spends the first two pages thinking "Wow" in every panel. Later in the story, Toad is introduced. He causes trouble and makes you feel sorry for him because of the stuff that happens first. Repulsive but pitiful. 4# "Am I Blue?" Suddenly there are four or so new X-Men, two of them with extreme attitude problems. No explanation given. Also, the Evolution Nightcrawler, who is having nightmares (not explained) and angst. This was my favorite jsut because I like most versions of Nightcrawler. Vol. 2 (Four stars) 1# I forget the title, but it's easily the best story in the book. Mystique and the Brotherhood try to get Rogue to switch sides. Their strategy seems to be: Mystique turns into an X-Man and says nasty things to Rogue. Member of Brotherhood shows up and tries to defend or comfort her, depending. Rogue gets as far as their house, then the third or fourth thing Mystique says makes Rogue figure everything out. She absorbs Quicksilver's and Mystique's powers and gets out. 2# This one is really forgetable. The Mimic meets Spyke skateboarding, almost joins X-Men but doesn't because he's a really nasty person. 3# "Beast of Burden". The Beast becomes a teacher, and the X-Men play a really weird form of baseball with a lot of new mutant students. I couldn't identify all of them. 4# This is a rehash of an old regular X-Men story. Callisto and the Morlocks kidnap Angel. The X-Men go rescue him, and Callisto and Storm fight. Different in the particulars (they got rid of Masque, thank goodness, though they kept Sunder and invented a lot of other Morlocks) and with a much lower level of violence (the original included a duel to the death, in which no oen died, but only because of a healer mutant's fortuitous presence). It's okay, nothing more. 5# LOUSY!!!!!!!!!!! Different, incredibly ugly style of drawing. Hideous. I hate it. More transparent colors, makes the characters seem rather younger, no aesthetic merit. Dumb story, too. THe X-Men throw a party and the Brotherhood (Avalanche, Blob, Toad) Crash it. (Where's Quicksilver?) As I said, boring & predictable.

I bought this, not really knowing what I was purchasing (the first volume I had seen in a local bookstore and had played with the idea of buying it for months before finding it cheaper online). However, Vol. 2 is a nice, quick read, just like vol. 1. It elaborates somewhat on episodes, and some of it is just on it's own. Sometimes it seemed like it didn't really fit into the show, or it needed to be read after seeing a particular episode, but all in all, it was pretty decent. The artwork was nice, although the manga-look threw me in a few of the issues collaborated in it, especially the last one. -Worth the money if you really liked the show.
